about

While we were unwrapping and studying the amazing paintings and drawings Susan Roberts brought for her show at the UNA art gallery it occurred to Wayne and myself that we should record some music in the room while the show was up as a response.

Once the pictures were hung and everything was in place we chose a night to record. We were very fortunate that Jim (James Wisniewski) happened to be in town that evening.

We were unable to obtain and transport all the equipment necessary to mike and record every instrument and voice. Instead, we set up two mikes in the middle of the room, plugged them into a mixer and from there into a laptop.

As with most Ascension Brothers recordings there was no rehearsal and no composition prior to the performance. Just as we were abut to start recording the electricity failed and we were left in the dark. This gave us a half hour or so to sit and talk and have a few moments of silence.

Just as we relaxed into the darkness the lights came back on, illuminating the paintings, and we started recording. The only instruction we had during the entire session was for the last track. We decided we wanted it to be serene and beautiful, or in Jim's words, "Don't wake the baby."

It was a pleasure to make music surrounded by Susan's paintings - they are so full of beauty, mystery and resonance. Her work has always been exceptional, but over the past decade she has created something genuinely unique. To see more of her work visit her website at: susanrobertsart.com/home.html

I wish we could have used the full range of professional gear and recorded the music as a studio recording. However, the live sound of the room reflects the spontaneity of the music and should provide the listener with a sense of what it was like to be in the room with the art while the music happened.
